The Punta de Abona lighthouse rises on a low, rocky headland on the southeastern coast of Arico, between Porís de Abona and the Abades area. It was inaugurated in 1902 to guide ships on the busy maritime route between Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the western ports of the islands, with an initial range of around 16 miles. In 1978 the original tower was replaced by the present one, taller and with recognisable horizontal red and white bands, which considerably increased its light range.

Beyond its function as a navigation aid, the lighthouse has become a scenic emblem of the municipality: its silhouette against the sea and clear sky makes it especially photogenic at sunset and during starry nights.

Essential information

Accessibility

By car: TF-1 exit 39 (Arico Viejo / El Porís), go down to the village of Porís de Abona and exit to the south; from there a dirt track leads almost to the lighthouse (it can also be accessed from Abades). You can park in the village of Porís and walk along the coast, or continue on the unpaved track to the lighthouse itself.

Risk Level

The lighthouse is situated on a low, rocky cape and the coastal paths surrounding it run through uneven terrain, rock, and ancient lava flows; wear sturdy footwear and stay away from the edge, especially with a swell.
