Verified content· Updated 25 June 2026
The Church of Santa Ana is the mother parish of Garachico, located next to the Plaza de la Libertad. It was founded in 1520 by Cristobal de Ponte, the founder of the town, who dedicated it to his wife Ana de Vergara. Severely damaged by the volcanic eruption of 1706, it was rebuilt following the original plans under the direction of master Andres Hernandez Salgado between 1714 and 1721.
Its interior, with three naves featuring harmonious columns and arches, preserves a Mudejar ceiling and chapels with Baroque altarpieces. It holds a rich artistic heritage from the 16th to the 18th centuries, with sculptures by Jose Lujan Perez, a Crucifix by Martin de Andujar, and a Christ of Mercy of Mexican origin. It is declared a Cultural Interest Site with the category of Monument, and includes a tower with a viewpoint and a museum of sacred art.
