Esqueleto de rorcual boreal
The contemporary symbol of Los Silos is the imposing skeleton of a sei whale (rorcual boreal) more than 16 metres long and weighing some twenty tons, displayed on the Charco de la Araña promenade beside the sea. Recovered from a stranding, its bones were rescued, studied, restored and treated as part of the "Sculptures of Nature" project, a pioneer in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, whose aim is environmental awareness and a tribute to the cetaceans of the Canary Atlantic. The piece requires regular maintenance, with sanding and new layers of fibre to protect it from the weather and salt. Open to visit freely all year round, it has become one of the municipality's most recognisable images and an educational resource that recalls the extraordinary richness of whales and dolphins in Canary waters.
