Wines of Tenerife
Updated 2 August 2026
Tenerife has five regional wine appellations: Abona, Tacoronte-Acentejo, Valle de la Orotava, Valle de Güímar, and Ycoden-Daute-Isora, each with its own regulatory council. Tacoronte-Acentejo was the first DO recognized in the Canary Islands in 1992, followed by Ycoden-Daute-Isora (1994), Valle de la Orotava (1995), and, in 1996, Valle de Güímar and Abona. In the Valle de la Orotava, on the northern slope of the island, vineyards are cultivated between 400 and 800 meters above sea level using the unique braided cord system, exclusive to this region.
Native varieties such as Listán Blanco and Listán Negro predominate, along with Malvasía, Marmajuelo, or Negramoll, on volcanic soils swept by the trade winds. Canary Malvasía was, until the 19th century, the most noble variety and responsible for the worldwide fame of these wines.
