Canarian Honey Rum
Updated 2 August 2026
Ron miel is a traditional liqueur from the Canary Islands, protected by the Geographical Indication (GI) of the spirit drink Ronmiel de Canarias, recognized at the European Union level. According to its regulations, it is made by mixing rum, cane or cane molasses spirits (or their distillates), water, sugars, plant extracts, and a minimum of 2% by volume of bee honey, resulting in a sweet liqueur with an alcohol content regulated between 20 and 30 degrees (the regulation only requires Canarian origin of the raw materials to use the 'Selecto' mention). It is a formula made on the islands for centuries.
In La Gomera, there is also gomeron, a homemade drink made with spirits and palm honey, the syrup obtained from the sap of the Canarian palm (which EU regulations do not allow to be called 'honey' because that term is reserved for bee honey). Ron miel is consumed on its own, with ice, or as a base for mixed drinks and cocktails.
