El Médano is a coastal area of Granadilla de Abona, in the south of the island, known for its northeast trade winds that blow for most of the year (more than 250 navigable days). The South Beach (also known as Los Balos area / South Bay) is the usual launch point for windsurfing, kitesurfing, and wing foiling, with volcanic origin sand (dark/toasted) and shallow waters with easy entry. The strongest and most consistent wind window is concentrated between April and September, with July and August being the safest months.

It is a public area for free use; in the water, different disciplines coexist in areas differentiated for safety.

Essential information

Accessibility

Access is via the TF-1 motorway (El Médano exit) and then the TF-64, which descends about 3.5-4 km to the center, where there is free parking on Avenida Príncipes de España and nearby streets; on windy days it's advisable to arrive early. El Médano offers PMR accessibility services (ramps, amphibious chairs and crutches, and in summer, bathing support according to Turismo de Tenerife) and is connected by bus, although it's advisable to check current lines and schedules on TITSA.

Risk Level

It is a point of strong and constant wind (trade winds), so windsurfing, kitesurfing, and wing foiling should be practiced with an appropriate level and always paying attention to the color of the flag and the lifeguard service indications.
