One of the key archaeological sites of TenerifeLiving vestige of the ancient menceyato of TeguesteHabitat caves, burial spaces, and rock engravings

This ravine is one of the most important archaeological sites in Tenerife and the living proof of the ancient menceyato of Tegueste. It is home to the Los Cabezazos site, declared an Archaeological Heritage Zone, where habitat caves and funerary spaces are preserved. Excavations by the University of La Laguna, revealed in 2024, dated the Cueva de los Cabezazos to at least six hundred years of continuous Guanche occupation, between the mid-7th century and the 13th century.

Ceramics, remains of consumed animals, necklace beads, mill fragments, and awls have been found there, making it one of the richest sources on the aboriginal life of the island. The surrounding area, of great natural value, also invites you to explore it on foot with respect for its fragility.

Essential information

Accessibility

The archaeological tour through the ravine has been offered as a guided walking route (about 4 km, low difficulty, around 4 hours) that starts and returns to San Marcos square, in the historic center of Tegueste, crossing the ravine's bed and slopes (caves, springs, and cliffs). The future Archaeology Interpretation Center "Los Cabezazos" is located in that same square; as of 2026, the rehabilitation works are completed and the building has already been handed over to the Town Hall, but it is not yet open to the public (pending museography and exhibition content). No specific bus lines, parking, or PMR accessibility are confirmed in official sources.

Risk Level

Part of the itinerary runs through the bed and slopes of the ravine, so appropriate footwear and caution with the uneven and slippery terrain are advisable.
