Cueva del Santo Hermano Pedro
Updated 2 August 2026
The Cave of Santo Hermano Pedro is located in Granadilla de Abona, next to runway 26 of Tenerife South Airport and near El Médano, in the ravine of Los Saltaderos. It is actually two adjoining caves that served as a refuge, place of prayer, and corral for Brother Pedro de San José Betancur (Vilaflor, 1626), shepherd and the first Canarian saint, when he led his flock through the region of Chasna. Declared a Site of Cultural Interest in the category of Historical Site in 1999 by the Government of the Canary Islands, today it is one of the main pilgrimage points on the island, with more than 300,000 visitors a year.
Inside, a wooden image of the saint and a relic of his are venerated, and the faithful leave ex-votos and written messages among the rocks. Here also concludes the Camino del Hermano Pedro, a pastoral route that starts from Vilaflor.
