Cave of the Wind, Icod
Updated 2 August 2026
The Cueva del Viento is a volcanic tube located in Icod de los Vinos, formed about 27,000 years ago by the eruptions of the Pico Viejo volcano, next to Teide. With about 18 kilometers of galleries, it is the longest volcanic tube in Europe and the fifth longest in the world, as well as one of the most complex due to its multi-level labyrinthine structure. Inside, unique lava formations such as lava stalactites, waterfalls, and lateral terraces are preserved, and it hosts a remarkable underground biodiversity with about 190 known species, 44 of which are troglobites (adapted to darkness) and 15 new to science.
The only way to visit it is through a guided tour of about 2.5 hours in total (with about 45 minutes inside the cave), in groups of up to 15 people and with prior ticket reservation. The Visitor Center, the starting point of the tour, is open daily from 9:00 to 16:00/16:30.
