Cueva de los Guanches (Icod)

Declared BIC Archaeological Zone in 2005Volcanic tube at about 125 m altitudeDatings around the 6th century BC

The Cueva de los Guanches is a Guanche archaeological site located in the El Cardonal area, on the cliff of Playa Moreno, in Icod de los Vinos. It is an open volcanic tube facing west, about 125 meters above sea level, which was seasonally inhabited by the indigenous population. It was declared a Site of Cultural Interest in the category of Archaeological Zone by Decree 125/2005, of June 14.

The excavations have provided some of the oldest settlement datings in the Canary Islands, around the 6th century BC, along with ceramics, lithic material (obsidian and basalt), bone awls, fauna remains, and a unique secondary burial. In the surroundings, circular and oval enclosures built with dry stone walls, linked to pastoral activity, were also documented.
