Iglesia de San Marcos Evangelista
Updated 2 August 2026
It is the monumental and spiritual heart of Tegueste. Dedicated to the patron saint of the municipality, it succeeds a modest first temple erected around 1530; San Marcos was established as a parish in 1606. The current building began to be constructed in 1699, was expanded during the 18th century, and was completed in 1847.
It features a Latin cross plan with three naves —the central one, the Ánimas, and the Rosario— and a slender tower about twenty-five meters high that dominates the historic center. Inside, it preserves a valuable heritage of imagery and altarpieces. The urban ensemble surrounding it was declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1986.

Every April 25th, the feast of San Marcos is celebrated; the multitudinous Romería in his honor takes place on the last Sunday of April, starting from the temple's surroundings.
