Quick overview: when to visit Tenerife
The short answer: Tenerife is fantastic year-round. With temperatures between 18°C and 28°C and over 300 sunny days, the island doesn't really have a "bad time." But each season offers different experiences, and choosing wisely can mean the difference between a good trip and an unforgettable one.
Best time by traveller type: Beach and warmth → June to September. Hiking → March to May or October to November. Escaping European cold → December to February. Budget travel → May, June, October or November. Carnival → February/March. Stargazing on Teide → year-round, but summer offers the clearest skies.Spring in Tenerife (March to May)
Spring is arguably the best time to visit Tenerife if you want the perfect balance. Temperatures are ideal (20-24°C), the island is at its greenest and most flowery, and tourist numbers are moderate. It's the prime season for hiking and outdoor activities.
Weather and temperatures
Daytime temperatures of 20-24°C, pleasant evenings of 15-18°C. Sea temperature around 19-21°C — cool but swimming is perfectly feasible. Rain is scarce, especially in the south. Anaga and the north may get fog and occasional showers, keeping the forests lush and green.
Why choose spring
Teide and Anaga trails are at their absolute best: comfortable temperatures, explosive vegetation and excellent visibility. Southern beaches are already warm and uncrowded. Flight and accommodation prices are reasonable. And if you come in February-March, you might catch the Santa Cruz Carnival — the world's second largest.

Summer in Tenerife (June to September)
Summer is peak season — guaranteed sunshine, warm seas and beaches at their best. But it's also when tourist numbers and prices peak, especially in July and August.
Weather and temperatures
Daytime temperatures of 25-30°C (up to 35°C during calima events, when hot Saharan air arrives). Warm nights of 20-23°C. Sea temperature rises to 22-24°C — perfect for long swims. Rain practically non-existent. The south is hotter and drier; the north is slightly cooler with possible morning coastal haze.
Why choose summer
If your priority is beach and ocean, summer is ideal. Water sports conditions are optimal: El Medano's wind attracts kitesurfers worldwide, and the sea is at its calmest for snorkelling and diving. Evenings are perfect for outdoor dining and nightlife peaks.
Watch for calima: Several times a year, hot dusty air from the Sahara can push temperatures up to 10°C above normal and sharply reduce visibility. Episodes last from 1 to more than 14 days (Servicio Canario de la Salud, the Canary Islands health service). It is not a harmless phenomenon: the Canarian health authority warns that calima should not be considered a benign natural event for health — a day of calima is associated with a 22.6% rise in hospital admissions for respiratory disease and 29.9% for COPD. During an episode: drink plenty of water, keep windows closed, avoid physical exertion outdoors and postpone mountain excursions. If you have asthma, COPD or a heart condition, take extra care.Summer stargazing on Teide is magical. Discover our Teide by night guide for the ultimate experience.
Autumn in Tenerife (October to November)
Autumn is Tenerife's best-kept secret. Summer crowds are gone, temperatures remain pleasant, the sea is at its warmest (23-24°C) and prices drop significantly. It's a special time for grape harvests, local festivals and the changing colours of the forest.
Weather and temperatures
October still feels summery: 24-27°C by day. November drops to 21-24°C. Rain starts to appear, mainly in the north, but tends to be brief and concentrated. The south remains mostly sunny.
Why choose autumn
The sea is at its best for swimming (it's accumulated heat all summer). Trails empty out and mountain temperatures are ideal for walking. The grape harvest at Tenerife's wineries creates a special atmosphere in bodegas and guachinches across the north. And accommodation prices drop considerably — you can find up to 40% savings versus summer.
Autumn is perfect for wine culture. Read our Bodegas Monje guide and plan your visit.
Winter in Tenerife (December to February)
While Europe shivers under snow, Tenerife offers 20-22°C and sunshine. Winter is peak season for northern Europeans fleeing the cold, meaning full hotels (especially at Christmas and New Year) but a unique festive atmosphere.
Weather and temperatures
Daytime temperatures of 19-22°C, nights of 13-16°C. Sea drops to 19-20°C — cool but perfectly swimmable for the brave. It's the rainiest period, but rainfall is moderate and concentrated in the north. The south continues to enjoy mostly sunny days.
Why choose winter
Winter brings the Santa Cruz Carnival (February-March), an explosion of colour, music and celebration rivalling Rio. Christmas and New Year have a special atmosphere with markets, living nativity scenes and local celebrations. Hiking is still possible, though northern trails may be muddy. And on Teide, snow on the summit creates a spectacular contrast with the sunny coast.
Discover what to do at Christmas in our Tenerife Christmas guide.
Fun fact: In winter you can have snow on Teide (2,000+ metres) and 22°C at the beach on the same day. Tenerife is probably the only place in Europe where you can have a snowball fight in the morning and swim in the sea in the afternoon — all within an hour's drive.Tenerife's climate by zone
Tenerife doesn't have one climate — it has several microclimates that change dramatically by area:
South (Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos, Las Americas)
The island's sunniest and driest zone. 300+ sunny days per year, minimal rainfall and the highest temperatures. Ideal for beach life year-round. Calima hits hardest here.
North (Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava)
Greener, cooler and wetter. Trade winds bring frequent clouds and some rain, especially in winter. Temperatures run 2-4°C lower than the south. The landscape is lush and dramatic. Best for those seeking nature and authenticity over constant sun.
Anaga (northeast)
The island's wettest and mistiest zone. Fog is frequent year-round, keeping the laurel forest alive. Mild temperatures but it can feel quite cool on the ridges. Always bring a waterproof jacket.
Discover why Anaga is magical in any season in our Anaga massif guide.
Teide summit (high mountain)
High mountain climate: cold, dry and with intense solar radiation. Sub-zero temperatures in winter, frequent snow above 2,000 metres. In summer, 15-20°C by day dropping to 5°C at night. Always bring warm layers and sun protection.
Seasons and prices
Peak season
July-August (European summer) and Christmas-Epiphany (December-January). Flights and accommodation at maximum prices. Booking 2-3 months ahead is advisable. Southern beaches are very crowded.
Shoulder season
March-June and September. Good weather, reasonable prices and moderate crowds. Probably the best value-for-money overall.
Low season
October-November and January-February (except Carnival) are quiet months on the trails and beaches, but they are not the cheapest of the year: on Tenerife, winter is high season for northern European visitors. According to Spain's statistics office (INE), the average rate per occupied room on the island in 2025 was €148, and those months matched or exceeded it (Oct €147, Nov €153, Jan €160, Feb €164), while January and February 2026 came close to €171. The genuinely cheap months are May and June (€120-131 on average in 2025-2026), followed by September. The maximum gap between the most and least expensive month of the year is around 25-30%, not 50%. There is no official published fare for flights: compare before booking. The weather is still pleasant, especially in the south.
Save money: Tuesdays and Wednesdays tend to be the cheapest days to fly to Tenerife. Searching 6-8 weeks ahead usually gives the best prices. If you're flexible, Tenerife North airport (TFN) sometimes has better deals than South (TFS) for domestic flights.Events and festivals by month
Tenerife has an incredibly rich festival calendar that can make a specific month perfect for your trip:
February-March: Santa Cruz Carnival — two weeks of parades, music, costumes and celebration. The island's biggest event, attracting visitors worldwide.
May-June: Corpus Christi in La Orotava — spectacular flower and volcanic sand carpets in the streets. Village romerías with traditional costumes, carts and gastronomy.
July: Patron saint festivals in several towns, especially Virgen del Carmen (patron of fishermen) with spectacular maritime processions.
August: San Roque pilgrimage in Garachico, grape harvest festivals in the north.
November: Dia de los Finaos (November 1st) — the Canarian version of Halloween with unique food traditions.
December: Christmas markets, living nativity scenes and New Year celebrations across the island.

What to do each season
Beach lovers
Southern Tenerife works as a beach destination year-round, but the optimal experience is June to October when water is warmest (22-24°C) and waves are gentlest.
Find the best beaches in our Tenerife beach guide.
Hikers
The best seasons are spring (March-May) and autumn (October-November): moderate temperatures, clear visibility and emptier trails. Summer can be too hot for mountain routes. Winter works in the south and at lower elevations.
Food and wine enthusiasts
Autumn (September-November) is harvest season — open wineries, guachinches with new wine and seasonal produce. But guachinches operate year-round and Canarian cuisine has no bad season.
Stargazers
Teide is spectacular year-round, but summer offers the clearest skies, the Milky Way visible in all its glory and warmer nights for observation. Winter has fewer daylight hours, meaning more dark-sky time.

Frequently asked questions
What's the cheapest month to visit Tenerife?November tends to be the most affordable: cheap flights, discounted hotels and the weather is still pleasant (21-24°C). January and February (outside Carnival) also offer good value.
Does it rain a lot in Tenerife?Depends where you are. The south is extremely dry — it barely rains. The north receives more rainfall, mainly in winter, but it's usually brief showers. Anaga and the peaks get the most rain and fog. Even in the wettest months (November-February), it rarely rains more than 5-7 days per month.
Can I swim in the sea in winter?Yes, absolutely. Sea temperature drops to 19-20°C in winter — cool but entirely swimmable. Southern beaches are most pleasant in winter, with air at 20-22°C. Many northern Europeans find this positively warm compared to their home seas.
Is it true you can have snow and beach weather on the same day?Yes, and it's one of the most incredible things about the island. In winter, Teide can have snow above 2,000 metres while the south coast sits at 22°C. You can literally have a snowball fight in the morning and swim in the sea in the afternoon — all within an hour's drive.
When is Tenerife Carnival?Carnival takes place between February and March, with exact dates varying each year (linked to Easter). The main week includes the Queen Election Gala, the Grand Parade (Coso) and the Burial of the Sardine. Check the Santa Cruz town hall website for exact annual dates.
Do I need a car to get around Tenerife? For the tourist south, buses and taxis work fine. But to explore the north, Anaga, Teide and rural areas, a rental car is highly recommended. It gives you complete freedom and prices are reasonable. Check our car rental guide.
