North vs South Tenerife: Which Side to Stay

North vs South Tenerife: Which Side to Stay

📋 In this article

One of the most important decisions when planning your Tenerife trip is choosing between north and south. They are two completely different worlds: the south is dry, sunny and touristy; the north is green, humid and authentic. Each area has its advantages and the best choice depends on what you are looking for.

☀️ The climate — The most notable difference

🌞 South Tenerife

Sunshine practically guaranteed year-round. Average temperatures of 24-28°C in summer and 18-22°C in winter. Very little rain. This is the zone chosen by most tourists.

🌿 North Tenerife

More variable and humid, especially in winter. Clouds get caught on the mountains creating the famous "sea of clouds". Temperatures 2-4°C lower. However, many days are sunny and the lush vegetation makes up for it.

💡 Key fact: Mount Teide acts as a natural barrier — the north receives moisture from the trade winds, while the south stays protected and dry.

🏖️ The beaches

Southern beaches

Larger beaches with light sand (often imported), calm waters and full tourist services. Playa de las Américas, Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos are the most popular. Ideal for families and swimmers seeking comfort.

Northern beaches

Black volcanic sand, stronger waves and dramatic landscapes. Playa Jardín in Puerto de la Cruz is spectacular, designed by César Manrique. The natural pools of Garachico are unique. The experience is more authentic but less "resort-style".

💡 For golden sand beaches with crystal-clear waters, the south wins. For unique volcanic landscapes and fewer crowds, go north.

🏨 Accommodation & prices

💰 South — Pricier but more options

  • 🏨 All-inclusive resorts from €120/night
  • 🏠 Apartments from €60/night
  • ⭐ Luxury hotels in Costa Adeje: €200-500
  • 📍 Best area: Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas

💰 North — More affordable & authentic

  • 🏨 Boutique hotels from €70/night
  • 🏠 Rural houses from €45/night
  • ⭐ Hotel Botánico (5★): from €250
  • 📍 Best area: Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava

🍽️ Food & dining

Eating in the South

Wide international offering: Italian, Asian, American cuisine. High-end restaurants in Costa Adeje like El Rincón de Juan Carlos (⭐ 4.9, from €120) or NUB (⭐ 4.8, from €95). Average prices higher than the north.

Eating in the North

The land of guachinches — family-run taverns serving homemade Canarian food for €6-10. Papas arrugadas with mojo are a must-try. The wine cellars in La Orotava and Tacoronte offer unique gastronomic experiences.

💡 For foodies: the north is unbeatable for value and authenticity. Guachinches are far more abundant, traditional and authentic in the north (Tacoronte-Acentejo region, La Orotava valley), though they also exist in the south linked to the D.O. Abona, where they are fewer.

✅ Our verdict

🏆 Which one to choose?

  • 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Families with young children: South — reliable sun, water parks, calm beaches
  • 🍷 Couples & foodies: North — guachinches, wineries, charming villages
  • 🥾 Nature lovers: North — Anaga, hiking, green landscapes
  • 🏖️ Beach & relaxation holidays: South — resorts, all-inclusive, water sports
  • 💰 Budget travelers: North — cheaper accommodation and food
  • 🌍 First time in Tenerife: South as base + day trips north (about 110 km and a 1 h 15 – 1 h 30 drive to Puerto de la Cruz)

💡 Expert tip: You do not have to choose just one. Tenerife is only 80km long. Stay in the south for guaranteed sunshine and dedicate 2-3 days to exploring the north by car. Best of both worlds!

❓ Frequently asked questions

Can you visit north and south in the same day?

Yes, easily. From the south (Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos) to the north (Puerto de la Cruz) is about 110 km by motorway (TF-1 + TF-5, going around via Santa Cruz), roughly 1 h 15 min – 1 h 30 min by car depending on traffic: the TF-5 gets congested at rush hour as it passes Santa Cruz and La Laguna. For reference, the direct TITSA bus on that same route (line 343, Costa Adeje Station – Puerto de la Cruz Station) states a journey time of 100 minutes. Many visitors take day trips to the north and return to sleep in the south.

Is renting a car worth it?

Absolutely, especially if you want to explore both areas. Prices start at €15-20/day. Without a car, you are limited to your accommodation area and organized excursions.

How many days do I need to see the whole island?

Minimum 5-7 days for a complete experience: 3 days in the south (beaches, parks, whale watching) and 2-3 days exploring the north (Anaga, Puerto de la Cruz, wineries, Masca). With 10 days you can enjoy it without rushing.

Is north or south better in winter?

In winter (December-February), the south has a clear advantage with 20-22°C and sunshine. The north can have cloudy days at 16-18°C. If you want guaranteed sun in winter, choose the south.

Where are the best sunsets?

Los Gigantes (west coast) offers the most spectacular sunsets on the island, with the sun setting behind 600-metre cliffs. Mount Teide at sunset is also magical, with the volcano shadow projected over the clouds.
