Best Time to Visit Tenerife: A Month-by-Month Weather Guide

Tenerife is known as the island of eternal spring, and for good reason: its subtropical climate keeps temperatures mild all year round, with no real extremes. That means almost any month is a good month to visit. The real question isn't when to come, but what you want to do and which part of the island you're heading to — because Tenerife has several microclimates at once.

Temperatures through the year

Temperatures stay pleasant in every season. As a general guide for the coast:

  • Winter (December–February): 18–23 °C by day; nights rarely below 15 °C.
  • Spring (March–May): 20–25 °C by day; nights around 17 °C.
  • Summer (June–September): 25–30 °C by day; nights around 21 °C.
  • Autumn (October–November): 22–27 °C by day; nights around 18 °C.

The sea plays along too: water temperature ranges from about 19 °C in winter to 23–24 °C in late summer, so swimming is possible all year.

The north–south contrast (the key point)

Tenerife doesn't have one climate, it has several. The northeasterly trade winds hit Mount Teide and release their moisture over the north, which is therefore greener, cooler and cloudier, with more rain — especially in winter. The south, sheltered by the mountain, is drier and sunnier: this is the land of guaranteed sun and beach tourism. It can be drizzling in La Laguna, sunny in Los Cristianos and snowing on Teide, all on the same day.

The calima

Now and then, most often in winter and spring (though it can also happen in summer), the calima arrives: a wind from the Sahara that brings warm air and suspended dust. It cuts visibility, pushes temperatures up and leaves the sky hazy. It usually lasts a few days and isn't the norm, but it's worth knowing about.

When to come, depending on your plans

  • Beach and guaranteed sun: May to October, in the south. Summer is hot but the sea breeze keeps it bearable.
  • Escaping the cold: winter is high season for many Europeans; the south still hovers around 20–22 °C.
  • Hiking: spring and autumn are ideal (no extreme heat or calima); in summer, start early and pick high-altitude or Anaga trails.
  • Climbing Teide: all year, but wrap up warm — the summit can freeze and snow in winter (access is sometimes closed by snow).
  • Stargazing: all year; Teide's skies are among the best in the world.
  • Whale watching: pilot whales and dolphins are off the southwest coast year-round.
  • Santa Cruz Carnival: February or March, one of the biggest festivals in the world.

What to pack

The rule is to dress in layers. Light clothes for the coast, a jacket or fleece for the evenings and the north, and proper warm gear if you're going up Teide. Comfortable shoes if you plan to walk, sun protection all year (the sun is strong even when it feels cool) and a windbreaker for the viewpoints.

In short

There's no bad time for Tenerife. If you want sun and beach with no risk, head south between May and October. If you're fleeing the European winter, the island is a mild refuge. And if your plan is nature and hiking, spring and autumn give you the best balance.
