Almeyda Military Museum
Updated 2 August 2026
The Historical Military Museum of the Canary Islands, popularly known as the Almeyda Military Museum, is located in the Almeyda Barracks (Fort), a 19th-century fortification on the waterfront of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and is under the Ministry of Defense. Its permanent collection covers the military history of the archipelago and includes artillery, weapons, uniforms, flags, models, and documents, with special emphasis on the Feat of July 25, 1797, when the Canarian troops and militias repelled the British attack led by Rear Admiral Horatio Nelson. The amputation of Nelson's arm is traditionally associated with the fire of the defending artillery, although the surgeon's report from HMS Theseus attributed it to a musket shot.
It should be clarified that the famous El Tigre cannon is no longer exhibited here: it is currently preserved in the San Cristobal Castle Museum, under the Plaza de España in the city. Admission to the museum is free.
