Los Realejos is located in the north of Tenerife, in the La Orotava Valley, at an altitude of about 327 meters and with nearly 38,000 inhabitants; the current municipality was born on January 6, 1955, from the merger of the old towns of Realejo Alto and Realejo Bajo. The military phase of the conquest of Tenerife concluded here on July 25, 1496, with the surrender of the Guanches at the Realejo Camp, an event commemorated by the church of Santiago Apóstol, erected in thanksgiving. It is known as the municipality with the most festivals in Spain, with more than 80 celebrations spread across its neighborhoods throughout the year.
Its most famous festivity is the Crosses and Fires of May (May 2 and 3), with more than 250 years of tradition and hundreds of adorned crosses, declared a Festival of Tourist Interest of the Canary Islands (2009) and of National Tourist Interest (2015); its pyrotechnic display, in which the streets of Medio and Sol compete, is considered one of the largest in Europe. The Romería of San Isidro Labrador, also declared of National Tourist Interest, is also noteworthy, as well as its coastline with El Socorro beach.
