Vilaflor, One of the Highest Villages in Spain
Updated 2 August 2026
Vilaflor de Chasna, located around 1,400 meters above sea level in the mid-altitudes of southern Tenerife, is the highest municipality on the island and is promoted as one of the highest villages in Spain. Founded around 1525 by the Catalan settler Pedro Soler and his wife Juana de Padilla, it became the civil and ecclesiastical center of the ancient region of Chasna. Its church of San Pedro Apóstol, originating from the 16th century, preserves altarpieces and a notable image of the saint, and the municipality is linked to Saint Brother Pedro de San José de Betancur, canonized in 2002.
Surrounded by Canarian pine forest and a gateway to the Teide National Park via the TF-21 road, it is also a high-altitude vineyard area among the highest in Europe and the starting point for several trails to the Lunar Landscape and the peaks.
