Teatro Guimerá
Updated 2 August 2026
Inaugurated in 1851, the Teatro Guimerá is the oldest theater in the Canary Islands, designed by the architect Manuel de Oráa, the first provincial architect of the archipelago. It was built in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on the site of the old Santo Domingo convent, with an Italian-style horseshoe-shaped hall characteristic of 19th-century theaters. Its current name honors the playwright Ángel Guimerá (1845-1924), adopted after his death.
It has been declared a Cultural Interest Site with the category of monument since March 16, 1983, and has been one of the main cultural venues in the city. It is currently closed for a comprehensive renovation (with reopening planned in 2028) jointly funded by the Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo of Tenerife.
