Minas de San José

Lunar-like pumice stone landscapeViewpoint on TF-21 at ~2,291 mOrigin: eruptions of Montaña Blanca

Las Minas de San José are former aggregate quarries in the northern sector of Teide National Park, in the municipality of La Orotava, next to the TF-21 road between La Orotava and Vilaflor. Its landscape of white, ochre, and golden tones comes from deposits of pumice stone and ash from the eruptions of Montaña Blanca, giving it that characteristic lunar appearance that is often photographed and used as a filming location. Mining, active until the 20th century, ceased when this activity was banned within the national park.

Today it is one of the most unique spots for photography, with a viewpoint located at about 2,291 m and a short trail that runs through the area.
