Volcán Chinyero
Updated 2 August 2026
El Chinyero is a volcanic cone that reaches 1,561 meters in altitude, located a few kilometers from the slopes of El Teide. It was the site of the last recorded eruption in Tenerife, which began on November 18, 1909, and ceased nine days later. It gives its name to the Special Nature Reserve of Chinyero, a protected area of about 2,379 hectares distributed among the municipalities of Santiago del Teide, El Tanque, and Garachico, which preserves a notable concentration of volcanoes and recent lava flows.
Its surroundings can be explored via marked trails, including a well-known circular route and the PR-TF 43 and its variants, which traverse pine forests and fields of black lava. To protect the endemic flora and prevent erosion, it is forbidden to leave the marked trails.
