Black Sand Route, Teide
Updated 2 August 2026
The Arenas Negras Trail (PNT-02) is a circular route of about 6 km and low difficulty within the Teide National Park, with an accumulated elevation gain of around 330 m (altitude between 2,046 and 2,298 m) and an approximate duration of 3 hours. It starts at the El Portillo Visitor Center and ascends skirting the Montaña del Cerrillar among abundant brooms growing on a pumice mantle, to a high point from which a wide panoramic view of the park, the Llano de Maja, and, on clear days, the sea of clouds over the La Orotava Valley can be seen. The descent runs along the caldera wall next to the Arenas Negras volcanoes, dark-toned pumice cones with sparse vegetation, in a volcanic landscape of great chromatic contrast.
It is a highly valued itinerary for its geology and views, located in the municipality of La Orotava.
