Low difficulty route in Teide (with a steep downhill section)Crosses fields of black volcanic sandLunar landscape of lava and ash

The Arenas Negras Trail (PNT-02) is a circular route of about 6 km and low difficulty within the Teide National Park, with an accumulated elevation gain of around 330 m (altitude between 2,046 and 2,298 m) and an approximate duration of 3 hours. It starts at the El Portillo Visitor Center and ascends skirting the Montaña del Cerrillar among abundant brooms growing on a pumice mantle, to a high point from which a wide panoramic view of the park, the Llano de Maja, and, on clear days, the sea of clouds over the La Orotava Valley can be seen. The descent runs along the caldera wall next to the Arenas Negras volcanoes, dark-toned pumice cones with sparse vegetation, in a volcanic landscape of great chromatic contrast.

It is a highly valued itinerary for its geology and views, located in the municipality of La Orotava.

Essential information

Accessibility

The trail (PNT-02, circular) starts and ends at the El Portillo Visitor Center, on the TF-21 road (km 32.1) of the Teide National Park, where there is parking; public transport is available via the TITSA bus line 348 (Puerto de la Cruz - La Orotava - Aguamansa - El Portillo - Las Cañadas del Teide/Parador), stop El Portillo. The route runs over irregular volcanic terrain with slopes, so it is not accessible for people with reduced mobility.

Risk Level

On the descent, next to the Arenas Negras cones, there are sections of steep slope (up to about 60%) on loose pumice, so it is advisable to wear mountain footwear and proceed with caution.
