Surfing in Tenerife
Constant waves and mild climate all year roundSouthern beaches with schools for beginnersNorthern reefs for experienced surfers

Tenerife is an established surf destination thanks to its consistent waves and mild year-round climate. To start, the southern beaches (Las Américas, El Médano for wind/kitesurf) have schools with beginner lessons; experienced surfers head for the northern reefs. Book a lesson with an accredited school that includes board, wetsuit and insurance.

El Médano is also one of Europe’s best spots for windsurfing and kitesurfing thanks to its steady wind.

Essential information

Accessibility

The star spot, El Médano (southeast), is reached via the TF-1 highway taking exit 55 towards Tenerife South Airport and the detour to TF-64 (about 4-5 km from the airport). There is free parking on Avenida Príncipes de España (about 100 m from the beach) and in the Montaña Roja area (large capacity, with a short walk to the shore). By bus, TITSA connects with line 470 (from Los Cristianos) and with lines 408 and 409 (from San Isidro). In summer (July-August), it is advisable to arrive early, before 9:30, to park easily.

Risk Level

It is an open sea activity: respect the flags and lifeguards, be careful with rip currents and wind (especially in El Médano), and the northern reefs are only for experienced surfers; beginners should always go with an accredited school.
