Loro Parque is a zoo and botanical garden of about 135,000 m2 on the outskirts of Puerto de la Cruz, inaugurated on December 17, 1972, by Wolfgang Kiessling. It houses the largest collection of parrots in the world, with nearly 4,000 specimens of about 350 species and subspecies, along with orcas, dolphins, penguins, gorillas, chimpanzees, sea lions, and an aquarium. Its Planet Penguin penguinarium, inaugurated in 1999, recreates the Antarctic ecosystem with real snow and is one of the largest in the world.
The visit combines animal exhibitions, dense subtropical vegetation, restaurants, and children's areas, and usually takes up a good part of the day.
