One of the best examples of Anaga laurel forestAccess only with prior free permitCapacity limited to 45 people per day

El Pijaral is an Integral Natural Reserve of about 300 hectares on the northern slope of the Anaga massif, within the Anaga Rural Park (municipality of Santa Cruz de Tenerife), declared in 1994. Its laurel and fayal-heath forest, popularly known as the Enchanted Forest, hosts a remarkable diversity of ferns, including the pijara (Woodwardia radicans), which can exceed two meters and gives the place its name. It is also a refuge for endemic birds such as the Bolle's pigeon and the laurel pigeon.

The route is the circular trail PRA-72 La Ensillada - Cabezo del Tejo, of just over 6 kilometers and about 3 hours, which passes by the Cabezo del Tejo viewpoint with views of Taganana and the north coast. Due to its environmental fragility, access is regulated and limited to 45 people per day, so it is mandatory to obtain prior free authorization.

It is reached via the TF-123 road inside Anaga, starting at the La Ensillada parking lot (between km 4 and 5); the free permit is reserved online through the Cabildo de Tenerife (tenerifeon.es) up to about 15 days in advance.

Risk Level

It is mandatory to carry the permit (fines for accessing without it), the trail may have muddy and slippery sections, so appropriate footwear and caution are advised.
