Free things to do in Tenerife: 20 incredible experiences that cost nothing

Tenerife is far more affordable than most tourists imagine. Beyond organised excursions and theme parks, the island hides dozens of free experiences that are, honestly, among the best things you can do here. From paradise beaches to trails through ancient forests, dizzying viewpoints and towns with centuries of history, the finest things in Tenerife have no entry fee.

After years exploring every corner of this island, I can confirm that many of the experiences that have stayed with me the most were completely free. This guide gathers the 20 best, organised by type, with all the practical information to help you enjoy them to the full.

Key fact: Tenerife has generally lower prices than mainland Spain thanks to IGIC (7% instead of 21% VAT). This is noticeable in supermarkets, fuel and restaurants. Your budget goes further here.

Beaches and natural pools: sun and sea for free

1. Playa de Benijo: the wildest beach

Black volcanic sand, wild surf and the Roques de Anaga rising from the sea. Playa de Benijo on the northern tip of Anaga is one of the Canaries' most spectacular beaches and costs nothing. No beach bars, no umbrella hire: just you, the ocean and a landscape from another world. Best in the morning to avoid the wind.

2. Charco de los Chochos

A hidden natural pool on the coast of Los Silos (Isla Baja, in the northwest of Tenerife), formed by volcanic activity, with seawater held between lava flows and rocks. You reach it via a set of stone steps with a handrail after a short descent on foot from the car park (Carretera El Puertito, 43-39, 38479 Los Silos). Bring proper footwear and food as there are no facilities nearby. A secret the locals guard closely.

3. Playa del Duque: luxury for free

Playa del Duque is one of the most beautiful southern beaches. Access is free (sunbeds cost, but the sand doesn't). Fine sand, crystal water and an elegant promenade. Bring your own towel and umbrella and enjoy it without spending a cent.

4. Garachico natural pools (El Caleton)

The lava pools at El Caleton in Garachico are one of the island's gems. Formed by the 1706 eruption that destroyed the town, today they are a complex of seawater natural pools with free entry. Showers, changing rooms and guaranteed sunshine. Perfect for families.

5. Bajamar natural pools

On the northern coast, Bajamar has several natural pools for swimming when the sea is rough. Free access, Atlantic views and a local atmosphere. A perfect plan for a different morning.

Hiking and nature: the best free trails

6. Sendero de los Sentidos (Anaga)

The Sendero de los Sentidos in Anaga is a short trail (1.5 km) through ancient laurel forest. Completely free. You start from the Cruz del Carmen Visitor Centre and walk among giant ferns, moss and centuries-old trees wrapped in mist. A magical experience at no cost.

7. Roques de Garcia (Teide)

💶 The prices in this guide are indicative market ranges, checked in July 2026. They change with the season, the provider and demand: confirm them before booking.

Entry to Teide National Park is free (only the cable car costs money). The Roques de Garcia circular trail (3.5 km, 2 hours) is one of Spain's finest walks and costs nothing. Roque Cinchado framed by Teide is Tenerife's most photographed postcard shot.

8. La Esperanza forest

The La Esperanza road (TF-24) winds through a spectacular Canarian pine forest with multiple free recreation areas featuring picnic tables, barbecues and trails. Ideal for a family outing with views of the forest crown and the sea of clouds.

9. Barranco del Infierno (Adeje)

While access requires advance booking for crowd control, entry costs 13 euros and the gorge trail to the waterfall is spectacular. A canyon carved over millennia with endemic vegetation and a 200-metre waterfall at the end.

Free hiking in Teide: All National Park trails are free except the cable car and the summit permit, which since 2026 costs 15 euros for non-residents (free for Tenerife residents and under-14s; booking required). Roques de Garcia, Sendero de Samara and the Las Canadas walk are some of Spain's best trails, and all free.

Spectacular viewpoints: vertigo-inducing views at no cost

10. Mirador de la Ruleta (Teide)

By the Teide Visitor Centre, this viewpoint offers a complete panorama of Las Canadas with the volcano presiding. Free access and parking. Best photos at sunrise or sunset.

11. Mirador de Cherfe

On the road from Santiago del Teide to Masca, this free viewpoint offers impossible views of the Masca gorge with the Los Gigantes cliffs in the background. Among the most impressive on the island.

12. Mirador de San Pedro (northern coast)

On the road between Icod de los Vinos and San Juan de la Rambla, this little-known viewpoint offers panoramic views of the northern coast with banana plantations in the foreground and Teide behind. Free and almost always deserted.

13. Cruz del Carmen (Anaga)

The Cruz del Carmen viewpoint in Anaga offers spectacular views of the laurel forest and, on clear days, across to La Laguna and Teide. Next to the Visitor Centre (also free) with an exhibition on Anaga's biodiversity.

For more views, stargazing at Teide from the roadside is free — you just need a blanket, a flask and a clear sky.

Historic towns and villages: walking through history for free

14. La Laguna (UNESCO World Heritage)

Walking through the historic centre of San Cristobal de La Laguna is completely free and one of Tenerife's best experiences. Cobblestoned streets, 16th-century colonial mansions, interior courtyards open to the public for free and a unique university atmosphere. Don't miss Calle San Agustin and the open courtyards. The Cathedral has a paid cultural visit (7 euros general, 6 euros over 65s, 5.50 euros young people and students; free for residents of the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, children under 13 and people with a disability of over 63%), so it only fits a free plan if you are a resident. Looking at its facade from outside, though, costs nothing.

15. Garachico

Beyond its free natural pools, Garachico has a beautiful old town for strolling. The Plaza de la Libertad, the Convent of San Francisco, the church of Santa Ana and the cobbled streets tell the story of a town reborn after volcanic destruction.

16. Masca

Visiting the village of Masca is free (only the gorge hike has a fee). Wedged in a vertical ravine at 600 metres with ocean views, it is Tenerife's most dramatic village. The access road is an adventure in itself. Wander its steep lanes and enjoy the views.

Free markets and events

17. Tacoronte Farmers' Market

On Saturday and Sunday mornings, the Tacoronte Farmers' Market is a festival of local produce: tropical fruits, artisan cheese, local wine, palm honey and homemade bread. Free entry, frequent tastings and a 100% local atmosphere. Similar markets: La Orotava (Saturdays), Adeje (Saturdays) and Tegueste (Sundays).

18. Local festivals

Tenerife celebrates patron saint festivals throughout the year in its various municipalities. Live music, traditional dances, street parties and a festive atmosphere, all free. The Carnival of Santa Cruz (February-March) is the world's second largest and completely free on the street.

Free culture and museums

19. Auditorio de Tenerife (exterior)

Santiago Calatrava's masterpiece in Santa Cruz is stunning from outside and free to admire. The surrounding promenade offers spectacular views. Free outdoor concerts sometimes take place on the esplanade.

20. Street art in Puerto de la Cruz

Puerto de la Cruz has a self-guided street art trail. The old town is dotted with works by local and international artists transforming facades and walls into open-air galleries.

Museums with free or reduced entry: TEA (Tenerife Espacio de las Artes) in Santa Cruz has free-entry hours. MUNA (Museo de Naturaleza y Arqueologia) has free entry during specific time slots. Several museums offer free entry on the first Sunday of each month.

Free (or almost free) food experiences

Winery tastings: Some wineries in the Tacoronte-Acentejo area offer free or very affordable tastings. Bodegas Monje has visits with tastings at very reasonable prices.

Market tastings: Farmers' markets often have stalls offering free samples of cheese, wine, honey and other local products. Tacoronte and Tegueste are especially generous.

Guachinches: Not free, but eating at a guachinche for 10-12 euros per person is probably the best food value in Europe. Papas arrugadas with mojo, ropa vieja and house wine for next to nothing.

Money-saving tips for Tenerife

Supermarkets: Mercadona, Lidl and HiperDino have very competitive prices. Buy water, fruit and snacks for excursion days and save on eating out.

Fuel: The cheapest in Spain. A full tank costs 35-45 euros and lasts 3-4 days of touring.

Eat local: Guachinches, tascas and village restaurants offer excellent home cooking for 8-15 euros. Avoid the most touristy beachfront restaurants where prices double.

Transport: If you hire a car, motorways are toll-free. For Santa Cruz and La Laguna, the tram is affordable and efficient.

Accommodation: Apartments with a kitchen let you prepare breakfast and dinner, saving significantly on restaurants.
