Montaña Roja
Updated 2 August 2026
Montaña Roja is a volcanic cone about 171 meters high located in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona, next to the town of El Médano, in the south of Tenerife. It is part of a Special Natural Reserve declared in 1994, with about 166 hectares that include the volcano, extensive dunes (médanos), and coastal wetlands. It owes its name to the reddish tone of its basaltic pyroclasts, a result of the oxidation of the iron they contain.
The area is home to more than 136 plant species, including the dune grass, and is a key point for observing coastal and steppe birds, being the last breeding refuge for the Kentish plover in the province. A trail ascends to the summit, from where you can see the beaches of El Médano and La Tejita.
