Plaza del Adelantado
Updated 2 August 2026
The Plaza del Adelantado is the historical, civil, and social heart of the old town of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, a city declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Created in the 16th century as the main square, it appeared in the Cabildo's records as San Miguel de los Ángeles Square before taking the name of the first Adelantado, Alonso Fernández de Lugo, conqueror of Tenerife, who resided at one of its ends. Around it are emblematic buildings such as the Town Hall, the Convent of Santa Catalina de Siena, the Casa de Anchieta, and the Chapel of San Miguel Arcángel.
A marble fountain, commissioned in Marseille and installed in 1870, presides over the ensemble, surrounded by gardens with lush Indian laurels. For centuries, it hosted markets, processions, proclamations, and other public events of the city.
