El Caletón

El Caletón is a group of natural pools and ponds on the coast of Garachico, formed when the lava flows from the Trevejo eruption (also known as the Garachico or Arenas Negras eruption) of 1706 reached the sea and, upon solidifying, sculpted whimsical shapes in the volcanic rock. That eruption blinded the old port of the town, one of the most important in Tenerife, marking the end of its golden age. Today, the pools, with clear water contrasting with the black rock, are distributed in ponds with names like Las Viejas, Los Niños, and Los Chorros.
The area is equipped with a promenade, access stairs, and an adjacent public pool, and is integrated into the town of Garachico along the coastal front.
Essential information
Accessibility
Located in the town center of Garachico (Avda. Tomé Cano), easily accessible on foot from the village and connected by the coastal promenade; there is a bus service and it is recommended to park in the old pier area or near the football field on days of high attendance.
Risk Level
It is a bathing area in natural pools open to the ocean: respect the waves and the signs, as the volcanic rock is slippery and the sea can come in force on rough days.
